Property owners of Punahou Circle apartment 1008 where Obama lived with his grandmother want to preserve the apartment and put it on the historical registry. Obama’s grandmother has rented it since the 60’s, just as he rents out the oval office the next four years, but who knows, he might decide to stay a bit longer.
Punahou Circle first hit the spotlight in October when the then presidential hopeful made a last stop to be at his tutu’s bedside. Crowds came then, and they keep coming.
The lease on Obama’s grandmother’s apartment runs through June.
Property owners say they don’t plan to put it back on the market, they’re taking the steps now to preserve and recognize its presidential importance.

The 47-year-old Obama assumed power over a country longing for change after former President George W. Bush’s eight divisive years in the White House, an era that witnessed the September 11, 2001 terror attacks, the beginning of wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and an economic collapse not seen since the 1930s Great Depression.

While aloha shirts and crisp Dockers are the Island version of formal, they won’t cut it in Washington. Everyone attending black-tie inaugural balls in Washington, D.C. is expected to show up in a tux for the gentlemen and evening gown for the ladies. Even the president-to-be is sprucing up his duds with his first purchase of a tuxedo in 15 years.
