Education Punahou School Originally created as a school for the children of Congregational missionaries living in Hawaii, Punahou School, founded in 1841 is, at present, the largest autonomous school on a single campus in the United States. The school has garnered a reputation of excellent preparation for higher education and of the 2008 class, ninety-nine percent are enrolled in four year colleges or universities. The name Punahou is derived from an ancient Hawaiian Legend about an elderly couple living in Hawaii during a time of drought. Desperate for water, they began having dreams of digging up a nearby Hala tree, under which lay fresh water spring. The couple did eventually uproot the tree and a spring came forward. They named the spring Ka Punahou (The New Spring) and, until this day, it lies at the heart of the school campus. President Barack Obama’s History at Punahou School: Obama entered the school in 1971 as a fifth-grader and later graduated in the class of 1979. Because of its rigorous curriculum, his mother, S. Ann Dunham Soetoro, returned Obama back to Honolulu from Jakarta, Indonesia specifically to attend the school.
